Strawman Paragraph

Bill Bryson believes that the United States is very safe. He believes this because there was no crime in the town he lived in. The town was so safe that people did not lock the doors of cars or houses and left bikes in the open unlocked. There was no theft because no one wanted to buy the stolen goods. Research shows that Bryson lived in Hanover, New Hampshire, a small town of about 10,000 people, that does have crime, but very little compared to the rest of the United States. In fact, CNN ranked Hanover as the second best place to live in the country. There is lots of crime in the United States, but Bryson lived in one of the safest places and therefore came to the wrong conclusion.

The United States is the safest country in the world, it makes it people feel secured even during a war period. The United State home to people how was a victim of war, people from third world counties and nearby countries. It is the most ideal place of peace and harmony so most people many believe but inside the real United States there are many thing going on that people sometime don’t notice or do notice. It is to say that the idea of America is perfect but the people are like everyone else they are not too mean and they are not too nice like Bryson world. There is a lot of gang activity going on in America, the police are trying to reduce gang activity but it is hard to do this knowing that a new gang might rise at any time. The creeps and bloods are the biggest gangs in America follow by the three nitrous and fourth conner. Even if the gang activity and gang killing is not what make America but the drugs that are smuggled to America such as weed and crack people kill each other over these things more than anything else.

Strawman Paragraph

Americans love to follow rules because it gives them a sense of order and organization in their society. There are also many rules set forth, both written and unwritten, in our society that may seem out of place or unnecessary. Sure, the people who believe these rules are not needed may have a point when it comes to rules such as "Only one bounce per dive on the diving board" as Bill Bryson claims in his book (21). This rule may seem silly to most people, but having personally seen a diving board accident as a kid, these rules are indeed necessary and put there for a reason. When I was eight years old, I saw a kid take three bounces on the diving board at a local pool and he ended up slipping on the diving board and falling off head first onto the concrete. People may think that as long as they are safe, some rules may be common sense. The truth is, all rules are made for a reason.

In this chapter talk about Bill Brysonis explaining reasons when he does'n like foods from restaurant. He claims that waiters at restaurant are part of small group peaple who have the apportunity to sabotage item you will sshortly be putting in your mouth(Bryson B). Not all waiters mess with your foodunless you're really upset them. In his case if you ask waitress to repeat the choices over again they might damage your food. My opinion is that they wouldn't contaminate your food for that reason. It's their job to name of the options for the paying custamer.

Disagree Paper

I for once, disagree about how Bill Bryson says that junk food is not good at all. I would say that junk food is good sometimes like when you going to a movie, or going places with your friends. Although I understand that many people would agree what Bryson said. They might say junk food is not good for your health. They also might say it makes you fat or gain more weight. They might say that they are McDonald ever corner in america. I would still say that junk food is still not that bad, the only person that is not good for is the people that are eating too much. The person who makes it only makes it for fun time or to enjoy it, and not to eat it all the time. If people eat the junk food sometimes then they would not be fat.

when we hear a police officer, we imagine a man with invincible powers, with authority over everyone, and a superman like character that flies around the city looking for someone to put behind bars . What are the chances of a bank robber to get away with his crime in the U.S? What are the chances of a criminal or a child molester to get away with their rape crime in the U.S? I'd say the chances are high most of the time, but it all varies depending on the area.

Bill Bryson feels that Americans as a whole are very wasteful. In some cases Mr.Bryson is right. We do waste electricity in our homes and offices, we leave computers on all night, there have been some instances where I have left my television on all night. There is no doubt that we as Americans can be wasteful but we have made a consious effort to change our lifestyle. For example 10 years you couldn't find a recycle bin to your life in my neighborhood. Now it seems that every person in the neighborhood has a recycle bin standing outside of their house when the trash is collected. The are more commercials in the United States that are broadcasted about the environment and what we need to do to save our planet. In fact the other day there was a story on the cbs news that said there new cars being developed that didn't need gas under 35 mph. Smart cars are on the road they way more environmentally friendly then the cars of the past. These steps weren't being made fifteen years ago. As a society Americans are making big strides to become eco-friendly. In no way am I saying that Ameicans are not wasteful but to all the nasayers who believe that there are no steps being made they should take a look at some of the efforts that U.S. citizens have made in the last couple of years. Bryson and others need to acknowledge steps that Americans have made to become more eco-friendly.

People in this country simply just don't walk anymore. America has become a very lazy country, and people don't walk as much as they should. Back in the day, people would always walk from their homes to the store to get groceries, and other things they needed everyday. The only problem with this claim is that people just can't do this anymore. The reason why people don't walk anymore is mainly because they can't walk to places like before. In today's world people are farther away from stores and other places needed to get everyday items.

The Strawman

Many people agree with bill bryson that junk foods are the cause of obesity in this country, becaus we see fast food establishments on every corner of the street, and we see supermarkest with whole sections just for sugary, high calorie foods. Bill argues that americans have access to limitless amounts of high calorie and sugary foods. He talks about how supermarkets have dozens of different types of cereals, and endless aisles dedicated to quick. tasty food. Now I agree that americans have an issue with junk foods and fast foods, but i dont think all the blame should go on the foods themselves. People actaually have to go and buy the food, and then eat it. It is all about self control.

it can be said that winter is the prettiest time of the year and nothing is better than everything being covered in snow. i agree it is nice to look out and see nothing but white and see the amount of difference between there being snow and there not being snow. of course if your a child snow is the prettiest thing ever because it can mean no school and a day at the park. i myself have stayed up as late as i could just looking outside for that one snowflake to start falling, just hoping that there is a blizzard on the way. well the question is that how can something dead be pretty? during winter nothing is alive, everything is dull and colorless and boring. humans haven't learned that winter sucks yet, in fact birds and bears are the only ones to have figured out winter isn't anything special, they either fly south or hibernate.

bill bryson compliant

Bill Bryon in this chapter talk about how his life is difficult. Bryon compliant when things didnt work out for him. that he worries about the small thing and think that those things makes his life difficult. like Bryon compliant about how his bag was stuck and cant get it to open but when he did get it to open his stuff in his bag flew everywhere. that is nothing compare if u got an entire bags of important stuff stolen from you that be worst. compare to a bag with is thing fell out in a room Bryson can atleast find his stuff or buy a bigger bag to put his stuff in compare to stolen bag.

In the chapter "The Risk Factor" Bryson says that we shouldn't own guns because kids find them and play with them. When they play with them they sometimes shoot it off and end up shooting them self. Bryson says that two many kids die because there playing with there dads gun. The fact that kids die from gun accidents is said but in fact only one percent of kids death are from a gun. In the past 25 years gun deaths have gone down 50 percent. Also if we cant own guns people braking in our house will know that we don't have a gun and they might have a gun. People who want to get a gun will be able to get one just like how people get drugs today.

Friendly People, Bill Bryson

Bill Bryson discusses in the article "Friendly People" that the United States is really safe, even safe enough to keep your doors unlocked. Bryson is also from New Hampshire, which is the safest state in America, so its not safe to say that "America" is safe in general. For example, we live in Delaware County which is number 5 in the nation to raise your children because of low crime rates and good schooling. Even though Delaware County is in the top 5 crime still happens all of the time, whether its serious crime or not. America may be safe when you compare it to other countries but in general crime happens everyday, all of the time.
